Compulsive Eating: Addiction

In our case, addiction involves us repeatedly eating for some form of pleasure or relief even though we understand it’s not healthy for us.

Triggers

Anxiety

Stress

Pressure

Insecurity

(Many more they are genuine to each individual)

We experience some kind of trigger and in return eat our problems away. The only bad part is we feel bad afterwards, its unhealthy, and our problems are still there. We have to learn to deal with our triggers in healthy ways. As I stated in my previous post, most people have addictions. It’s hard dealing with life’s obstacles and maintaining balance. Triggers cause people to overindulge or use things for relief. In fact, when most of us developed our eating addictions we were not aware. I developed mine as a child and I had no idea it would have these life long implications. I just found pleasure in flavor and relief through eating.

I can say that little by little our addictions can become less significant. They will not control us for ever and we can develop skills to avoid relapse.

Compulsive Eating: Emotional Eating

I define compulsive eating as the desire to eat for comfort. Food haunts us at times, like any other obsessive thought once you develop a food desire its hard to free your mind of it.  This serves as a problem because both over and under eating affects our nutritional level. Over consuming food can deter results and under eating food causes deficiency. We need balance by eating for nourishment.

If you’re seeking to become healthier and suffer from compulsive eating this may be your biggest battle. Understand that this addiction can be overcome and that it’s something you will work on for the remainder of your life. YOU CAN DO IT! Its important to understand what emotional eating is, to mindfully address your impulses. Emotional Eating:

Hunger that comes on suddenly.

Craves only certain foods.

Leads to mindless eating.

Leaves you unsatisfied when even after your full.

Is not located in your stomach.

Often times leads to regret, guilt, or shame.

If you experience these things in relationship with eating your likely an emotional eater. That’s okay, the first step is recognizing the problem. Now you can address these urges as they come and begin to talk yourself out of it. I write, draw, meditate, or deal with whats causing me stress head on when I feel my compulsive eating coming. I stop and self talk: “Bianca, your not hungry what’s really bothering you?” Most people have some form of addiction they retreat to for comfort, food is ours. This is the first step to kicking that addiction and replacing it with something positive.

Quick summary I am Bianca Jazmine:

  • College senior, Psychology major; Art minor
  • In July ’13 I was finally ready for change & began my journey!
  • I played a couple sports in high-school but I am in no way an athlete.
  • I have no background in fitness outside health class, and gym in high school.
  • I am obese
  • I am a recovering compulsive eater

  • So far I have lost 47lbs  and at 208lbs I plan to lose 35-40 more lbs. I feel 165-173 lbs is a healthy range for me, I just want to be healthy.

Dear, College Students – It can be done

You don’t have to wait until you have more free time. You can start now, little by little. Baby-Steps

  • Drink water at little more, and lighten up on other refreshments.
  • Work out 2-4 times a week, it doesn’t have to be intense.
  • Eat a little cleaner, try replacing chips with fruit or veggies, friend with baked, & white with wheat.
  • FOLLOW fitness pages on your social media (MOTIVATION)
  • Do your research, ask questions, and learn what’s best for you. Approach this lifestyle as if it were a midterm paper and you need to cite several sources.
  • JUMP IN 🙂 everyone had to start somewhere! 

Dear, College Student – Call to action

As college students we are taught to abide by the rules or we will not survive in academia. So we go to class, get our homework done, work to survive, participate in campus organizations and do whatever else we can think of to better our resumes. Or course our health matters to us, but in the scheme of things its just not that important.

  • We can’t  miss class when we are sick with a cold, without being required to present some type of proof. Therefore, if college policies consider so little about our personal health under extreme conditions like sickness, we in return begin to think working out can not become a priority. After all, working out is a preventative measure for avoiding sickness and maintaining good health. After a day of classes, meetings, and work the next steps are to do homework and go to bed.

As a fellow college student I completely understand. Being a young adult in general makes navigating through theses new responsibilities difficult. College students have BILLS, BILLS, organizations, jobs, community service, on top of BEING A SCHOLAR FIRST.

  •  I must tell you: My love those responsibilities are not going away, you will have to balance responsibilities for the rest of your life. College will be replaced by a career, husbands, and children will be added into the equation and your health will always be a factor.

I know most students came to college to obtain financial security in the career path of their choice. Think about this though: Wither you chose to address it  now or not, you need your health. We tend to not understand that we depend on our bodies to complete every goal we seek to accomplish. Makes no difference if your a full time student or a CEO of a company, you need your health! As college student we abuse our bodies constantly by not providing it with good nourishment, not getting enough sleep, or physical activity. Then as post-graduates, employers, and employees we expect our bodies to get us through the day, week, month, year, and decades. How great will achieving your professional/financial goals be if your suffering from heart problems, diabetes, cancer etc? At what point do you begin to realize you need a Give-Take relationship with your body? I hope that time is now. THIS IS A CALL TO ACTION, LATER IS NO BETTER THAN NOW.

 

Bianca Jazmine’s Journey Full of Health

Who is Bianca Jazmine and why did she begin A Journey Full of Health?!

This is me exactly a year ago! Emotionally I was content with my overall life and stressed with maintaining my responsibilities. From academics, to campus/community involvement to independence and personal relationships I had a lot to balance. Although my psychology major has nothing to do with it, I had been doing nails and makeup on campus for two years. I absolutely loved it, but when people would try to get me to model in fashion shows and I  would always shy away. It was at that point that I realized my I was a little uncomfortable with my body. I began to research my body type and exercises that were best for me. I was extremely discouraged with thoughts like : “None of those people look like me.” “I can’t keep up with what they are doing!” “Why aren’t bigger people in exercise videos, etc?” I tried buying healthier foods without understanding what that meant and eventually everything went to the back burner, “I had more important things to worry about”.

In July, I was ready. I had just turned 21 and decided I’d had enough. I was tired of living in fear. Fear has caused me social anxiety and stress for years! I have a pretty confident exterior so most people mistook it as me just being an asshole, NO WHEN I WALKED INTO A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE: my heart raced, I was nervous, always in fear of being judged, I did not want to say  or do the wrong thing, I felt extremely awkward, and most of all cared about what people thought of me because I wanted to be liked. With all of these concerns, I could not relax and interact with people the way I would if it were only 2-4 people around. Because of this I knew my dreams of being in cosmetology, modeling, even my career of Art therapy would suffer. As my Senior year approached I decided to force myself outside of my shell and made a list of things I needed to accomplish to LIVE instead of just being ALIVE:

  • Faith
  • Healthiness of mind, body, heart, and spirit!
  • Positivity and Resilience
  • Understanding who and what I am =>  TRUE Confidence

These four things were my toolkit to becoming the woman I dream of being. Weight-loss was certainly important but as you can see this goes much deeper. Weight lose is not my primary focus, obtaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is. Being healthy begins MENTALLY then it transcends to the PHYSICAL body.

All are WELCOME :) especially, college students, those that suffer from compulsive eating and those that consider themselves overweight/obese. This is support for those seeking a healthier lifestyle! A JOURNEY FULL OF HEALTH <3
